The Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Gustavo Dudamel, brings a program that bridges the contemporary with the timeless. The evening opens with Humboldt’s Nature by Venezuelan composer Ricardo Lorenz, a symphonic fantasy inspired by Alexander von Humboldt’s journey through South America. Written for Dudamel and the LA Phil, the work combines vivid orchestral colors with personal reflections on Venezuela’s landscapes and history.
Next comes Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by Yunchan Lim, the sensational young pianist who won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at just eighteen. Both lyrical and dramatic, the concerto remains one of the most treasured works in the repertoire.
The concert concludes with Beethoven’s stirring Egmont music, composed for Goethe’s tale of sacrifice and freedom. From its dark opening to its triumphant finale, the work captures the fight for justice in music of unshakable conviction. Soprano Elena Villalón lends her voice to its climactic moments.
